Unión Progreso y Democracia (UPyD, UPD - Union, Progress, Democracy; website) originated in Plataforma Pro, an on-line platform established to discuss the need of a new, nation-wide political party. The 45 people, mostly Basque, who gathered on 19 May 2007 in San Sebastián to set up the platform were soon joined by other from all over Spain, so that the platform's membership increased to 3,000.
During an assembly celebrated on 22 and 29 September 2017 in Madrid, UPyD was organized, with a Board of 19 members and a Political Council of 150 members. Rosa Díez (b. 1952), a former member of the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE), was elected spokesperson of the new party, which was registered on 27 September 2007.
In the 2008 general elections, UPyD obtained 1.19% of the votes and Rosa Díez was elected at the Congress of Deputies. In 2011, the party obtained more than one million votes, securing five seats at the Congress. The UPyD subsequently nearly disappeared from the political landscape, obtaining 0.62% and 0.21% of the vote in the the 2015 and 2016 general elections, respectively.

The flag of UPyD (photo, photo) is magenta with the party's symbol, counter-colored (a magenta "Y" inscribed in a white disk) surrounded on each side by another two similar symbols of decreasing size and contrast. This particular design is featured on the cover of the party's Statutes.
The emblem was changed on 3 October 2015, this being reflected in the party's Statutes (text) amended during the 3rd Congress of UPyD, held in 2007.
Article 3. The logotype of the party is an horizontal rectangle with rounded angles, magenta, charged with the letters "U", "P" and "D" on a white background. Between letters "P" and "D", on a magenta background, is placed a white letter "Y".
Article 4. The symbol of the party is a magenta disc inscribing a white letter "Y".
Article 5. The logotype can be modified by Agreement of the Board without modifying the present Statutes, the modification being to be approved during the next meeting of the Political Council.
The new emblem includes letter "Y", while the former one used the
acronym "UPD". In the party"s name, "y" means "and". In 2011, the
militant Álvaro Pombo said: "Spain experiences political disjunction,
either the PP or the PSOE, which is boring. We, UPyD, grammatically represent the partisans of the copulative conjunction; the politicians of the 'and'."
The new emblem emphasizes "the 'Y' that unites and sums", while keeping
the magenta color, which is "unique, modern and free". The logo
expresses "the force and valiance of a party that, for the first time,
challenges the country's obsolete bipartism".
